new gdl book

On sale, beginning March 30:

I adore Giada. I have all of her books and have even been known to stand in ridiculously long lines to see her/get her autograph. But I have a confession: Since she had her baby last year, I'm not as over-the-moon with what she's been doing on her show. Maybe it's just me (and I'm completely willing to admit that); but her cooking has taken on a tone of "This is what Todd likes," and "Now that I've had the baby ..." to which I just can't relate.

I'm happy for her continued success--personally and professionally--and I'm eager to check out her new book. But I'm missing the old Giada just a little bit.

love for dark chocolate

I've never been a fan of dark chocolate. When given the choice between milk chocolate, white chocolate, and/or dark chocolate, my ranking of the three would have always been: one, two, and three, respectively.

But in my recent quest for a healthier 2010, I've stumbled across the yumminess that is dark chocolate--particularly, Lindt's Excellence line (the Intense Mint Bar is my current fave). Either I've been missing out, or I've become so starved for something sweet as of late that this dark goodness has made a believer out of me.

Obviously one has to exercise some discipline where chocolate is concerned, but the Flat Belly Diet has the following to say about it:
Dark chocolate is rich in flavanols and proanthocyanins, both of which boost good HDL cholesterol levels. It also contains natural substances that help control insulin levels and relax blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and provides important minerals including copper, magnesim, potassium, calcium, and iron.
Experts also say that chocolates with a higher "cacao," or cocoa, content--the package usually lists the percentage (Lindt is great about this)--are typically darker, less sweet, and slightly more bitter, but in a good way. Semisweet and other dark chocolates are low enough in sugar and high enough in monounsatrated fats to get accolades with the Flat Belly Diet folks.

So ... Happy February to me and my new lover, dark chocolate.

texans celebrating first 'armadillo day'

Eat your heart out, Punxsutawney Phil.

From News 8 Austin:

Last year the Senate decided that the Texas spring forecast will be determined by Texans at the West Pole on February 2 of each year.

The Lone Star Meteorological Society found “Bee Cave Bob," an area armadillo, has been right in his prediction 98.6 percent of the time.

So I guess all that's left to do is decide what wine to serve on Armadillo Day.

chandeliers

I'm semi-obsessed with them right now and more that a little bummed that I don't have one (or three). Going to have to do some serious thinking about this ....
